24 QUESTIONS ABOUT OTHER INTERESTS AND TO EVALUATE THE WAY OF THINKING OR COMMON SENSE

The employers require, in general, their collaborators to be capable to think clearly, synthesize information quickly and be responsible for their decisions. Some highly required capacities is common sense, general culture and communication with other people of different levels, from the press to office personnel of other companies, from their own country and from others. That is why we consider important to evaluate other aspects of the candidate further than the specific ones for the position.

Now we will give you ideas of questions about the particular (before elaborating this part of the questionnaire, review the questions on Chapter 15 and the Appendix).

The abilities related to communication in the media will also be discussed in Part II.

  1. Are you interested in sports?
  2. What do you do on your free time?
  3. What were your extra curricular activities as a student?
  4. What section of the newspaper do you read first?
  5. What magazines do you frequently read?
  6. What is your favorite television show?
  7. What public person attracts you? Why?
  8. Can you name the ministers of our current government (or state secretaries or other functionaries that may be related to your task such as governors, judges, legislators, etc.)? We recommend making this question only to management levels, public relations and others that requires the context location.
  9. Have you ever been a leader of… (political participation, for example)?
  10. Do you consider yourself an expert in wines (cigarettes, cars, etc)?
  11. It is prohibited to smoke here, how would you feel if you would work with us? Companies, buildings and public places in which it is prohibited to smoke are more frequent everyday. This is a discrete way of knowing if the person smokes or not.
  12. Does your social life include your work mates?
  13. What kind of jobs did you have as a teenager?
  14. What do you do in order to progress?
  15. What is your plan on professional progress?
  16. What has been the most interesting trip you have ever made?
  17. An interesting technique of evaluating common sense is to make a comment about some actuality news and see how the postulant analyses it. They are not ready for that and this will let you analyze their points of view, exposed in a spontaneous way.
  18. At the same way, you can ask about a very popular television show or a new service or something that is new at the moment of the interview.
  19. What kind of compliments do you receive from your friends/bosses/mates? What is your opinion about them?
  20. Analyzing your career from your beginnings up to now, how do you see it in perspective?
  21. Have you changed your tolerance to accept your subordinates’ mistakes along the years?
  22. Describe a situation in which your work or an idea of yours was objected.
  23. You are an adviser hired to evaluate the organization and me. Based on your observations about this interview, describe my style of operating and the one of all the people you know. Finally, tell me how I can improve the organization.
  24. If you have a great idea, how do you present it?
